Is your sleep being interrupted by snoring or are you waking up exhausted? Snoring and sleep apnea can cost you a night's sleep, and, over time, can cause long term health problems caused by chronic sleep deprivation.

Did you know that both conditions can be treated by your dentist? At Tacoma Dental Centre we offer a variety of treatments for snoring and sleep apnea to help you and your loved ones get to sleep.

Snoring

Everyone snores at one time or another, but if snoring is frequent or loud, it can disrupt not only your own sleep, but the sleep of your loved ones as well. Snoring happens when air can't move freely through your airway and it causes the tissue around your throat and nose to vibrate, creating the familiar snoring sound. It can be caused by many factors, such as an obstruction in your airway or nasal passage, age, sleep posture, being overweight to name a few.

Depending on what's causing you to snore, there are a variety of dental treatments that can be used to reduce or eliminate snoring. Sleep counselling, dental appliances such as bite guards to reposition your jaw, or orthodontic therapies are a few of the treatments we offer to help you stop snoring.

Sleep Apnea

Sleep apnea is when you stop breathing for a period of time while you're asleep. The most common cause of sleep apnea is when the muscles at the back of your throat relax when you're asleep, causing your airway to narrow or close completely. This may result in you being unable to take a breath, and as a result you wake up briefly and start breathing. Sufferers can wake up 5 to 30 times an hour, often without remembering they woke up. Apnea can severely disrupt your sleep and have serious effects on your quality of life and your health.

If you or your loved ones suspect you have sleep apnea, we can diagnose the condition in our office. Sleep apnea can be treated with a CPAP device and mask that you wear when you're sleeping, making changes to your health such as quitting smoking, losing weight or reducing stress, surgery, or other treatments.
